 <p.s>   This fruit has nothing to do with the ordinary apple. 

              Western people call it wax apple is because its surface 

              is as shiny as a waxed floor. 

Wax Apple is called in Taiwan LIAN-WU , a tropical fruit. 

Bell Fruit was introduced to Taiwan by the Dutch in the 17th century, and Pingtung ( 屏東), Taiwan is the most famous place of origin. In addition to the original red and green , there is also a new variety of dark red .

Taiwan Bell Fruit ( Lian-Wu ) - many varieties   :  

1) Deep (large) red species - 

The fruit is small in shape, inverted conical shape, length and short, average fruit length is about 4.4 cm, the fruit color is dark red, the flesh is white with light red, the sweetness is low, slightly astringent, storage stability, the sugar content is about 6.4 Brix, average The average fruit weight is about 44 grams.

It has the longest history of cultivation in Taiwan, the fruit is the smallest, the color is bright, but unfortunately it has a slightly astringent taste and the lowest sweetness. 

It is the early Wax Apple in Taiwan.

2) Pink species -

The fruit shape is large, conical, the peel is pink to dark red, the moisture is high and the taste is sweet, the average fruit length is about 6.7 cm, the top width is about 6.4 cm, the longitudinal and transverse diameters are similar, the sugar content is about 10-14°Brix, the highest can be Up to 18Brix, the average fruit weight is about 90~150 grams. It is currently the most cultivated variety in Taiwan, commonly known as Black Pearl, and the most economically valuable cultivar.

It is called "black pearl" because of its dark red color, reflective look like shiny pearl, and extremely sweet flavor.

3) Black Diamond Lotus Mist -

Fruit growers use "fruit thinning" and "bagging techniques" to cultivate wax apples with extra-large fruit, deep red with luster, more moisture, sweet and refreshing, called "Black Diamond".

4) Black Diamond Apple Wax -

Improved from the black pearl , the fruit is grown and it is called " Black Diamond "  " King Kong".

Traditional Taiwan  Medicine Efficacy  :

Apple Wax, Bell Fruit, Lian-Wu , is sweet in taste, flat in nature and has a special fragrance. It is a natural antipyretic agent. Contains a lot of water, it has antipyretic, diuretic, calming and soothing effects in diet therapy. Lotus mist is a good fruit that can cure many diseases. It mainly treats lung dryness, coughing, unstoppable hiccups, hemorrhoids, bleeding, stomach and abdomen, enteritis, dysentery, and diabetes. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that lotus mist is "sweet in nature and sweet in nature", which has functions of moisturizing the lungs, relieving cough, eliminating phlegm, cooling blood, and astringent. In the theory of TCM diet therapy, cooking lotus mist with rock sugar can relieve cough and eliminate phlegm, while applying a trace amount of salt to eat lotus mist can cure indigestion. The folks in Taiwan have the theory of "eating Lian - Woo to clear the lungs and fire."

Wax Apple ( Lian-Woo )  nutrition : 

1. It is rich in carbohydrates, the energy necessary to maintain brain  function; regulate fat metabolism; provide dietary fiber; save protein.

2. Contains nutrients such as protein, dietary fiber, carbohydrates, vitamin B, C, etc., which can treat a variety of diseases.

3. Contains a lot of water, has a diuretic effect, 

and has low sugar content.

Nutritional analysis  : 

Some researchers have analyzed the nutritional components of lotus mist. The results showed that the contents of each nutrient component of lotus mist (fresh) were 78.07mg/kg of vitamin C, 0.205mg/kg of organic acid, 0.690% of protein, 7.680% of total sugar, and 90.75% of water content.
